Digging service in Milton Keynes

Digging borders in your garden

By digging over soil in your garden borders you could have a productive flower bed or vegetable patch made ready for planting or sowing seeds.

One of the most beneficial jobs to do in your garden is digging soil but is also the most labour intensive. We can turn a patch of soil in your garden into a deep loose soiled well-draining garden bed. This can be achieved by the process of double digging which involves loosening the soil more than 1 foot down. By doing this conditions are created under which will allow the plants roots will find it easier to penetrate further into the soil and they will thrive.

The major benefits of double digging is that the deeper layers of your garden’s soil are aerated allowing more oxygen to your plants, they will be able to grow bigger and stronger due to there being more room for their roots. Also water drainage is improved greatly, which is extremely important for healthy plants.

Another good reason to dig the soil over is to improve the quality by digging in garden compost and other organic matter or rotted horse manure. We can do this for you.

Some examples of digging

A flower bed after digging and turning the soil with a garden spade.

We used a fork and spade in this rose border to turn over the soil. Before the heavy clay soil was compacted. After compost was added to improve soil fertility and aeration.

A lawn edged and a new border dug over ready for planting.

The owner of a new build in Newton Leys asked us to dig a border for roses and small shrubs. Firstly we edged the lawn to create a nice shape. After digging over the soil we mixed in some compost before returning at a later date to add the plants.
